Ralph J. Rivers Papers 1959-1966

Ralph Julian Rivers (1903-1976) was Alaska's first U.S. Representative to Congress. He also served as an Alaska Territorial Senator, Second Vice-President of the Alaska Constitutional Convention, and U.S. Representative-elect under the Alaska-Tennessee Plan. The bulk of the materials relate to Rivers' eight year tenure as Alaska's first United States Representative in Congress from the then-new state of Alaska. The collection includes copies of House Bills and Resolutions as well as reports, new releases, notes, correspondence, memoranda, petitions, newsclippings, photographs, publications, ballots, audio recordings, films and scrapbooks.

Ralph Julian Rivers was a lawyer who became Alaska's first U.S. Representative to Congress. He came to Alaska with his parents and younger brother, Victor C. Rivers, in 1906, and received his early schooling in the mining town of Flat. He was admitted to the bar in 1931 and practiced law at Fairbanks.
